If you’re planning to change or dislodge a light bulb from a recessed socket without prior technical knowledge, then chances are you are stuck at the very first step. Nowadays, light bulbs are an indispensable appliance in our households.
However, like any other gadget, they will break down with time. The good thing is, they can always be replaced with a new one. Changing a light bulb is quite easy and doesn’t require a lot of training. Nonetheless, it can prove to be a daunting task if you are changing it from a dislodged socket.
In this article, we’ll go through a quick guide on how to remove light bulb from recessed socket without breaking it.
How to Remove Light Bulb from Recessed Socket? (Helpful Tips)
Simply follow these steps:
1. Turn off the bulb and let it cool
This is perhaps the first and the most important thing to do while dealing with any gadget that uses electricity. Make sure that you unplug or switch off the power first before repairing or changing the bulb. After doing so, allow the light bulb 10 to 15 minutes to cool down.
2. Take a tape and cut it to make a loop
Get a tape and a pair of scissors, then cut a piece of about 2 feet. Using the two-foot-long piece, make a loop by gently fixing both ends together. Additionally, make sure the sticky side is facing the inward side.
3. Use the tape to create handles
Typically, the main purpose of the tape is to enable you to comfortably hold the bulb without touching it. Lower the looped tape around the bulb and press the sticky part around it. Now that you have a grip on your bulb, pinch more tape and stick it to form two long handles on both sides of the bulb. What’s more, if you think the bulb might break based on its positioning in the recessed socket, you can wear work gloves for more safety.
4. Twist in a counterclockwise motion to remove the bulb
Now that you have made a duct tape loop and created handles around your bulb, you can proceed to dislodge it from the socket. Grip the ends of the handles with your thumb and index finger and twist the bulb in a clockwise motion. You will have comfortably loosened its grip on the socket, thereby, dislodging it from the socket.
Note: if the bulb’s grip on the socket is too tight, you can always seek help from a professional electrician. Keep in mind that in order to know how to remove light bulb from recessed socket, you will need a bit of practice.
Additionally, in case you break the bulb while dislodging it from the socket, you can use an unpeeled potato to safely remove the base of the bulb. Just don’t forget to turn off the power first.
